On November 12, 2018, Well Mahu 015, deployed by China National Petroleum Corporation in the Mahu area of the Junggar Basin, struck a high-yielding commercial oil and gas flow in the Jurassic Badaowan Formation. The well produced an impressive 405.6 cubic meters of oil and 36,000 cubic meters of gas per day without fracturing—setting a new record for single-well daily output in Xinjiang's oilfields. This successful discovery highlights the extraordinary resource potential of the Mahu region. The Mahu Sag has gained global recognition recently following the groundbreaking discovery of a billion-ton-scale conglomerate oilfield in the area. To date, industrial oil and gas flows have been confirmed in 29 wells across 32 layers in the region's shallow to intermediate depths. Notably, 12 of these wells—including 14 layers—produced commercially in 2018 alone, showcasing not only their shallow burial depths but also exceptionally high individual well yields, making this area highly promising for future development.
